Sociology in Focus

Sociology in Focus is a textbook for those studying sociology at A-Level or Further Education course. It has chapters on various topics, such as social theory, methodology, class stratification and education. The book has numerous illustrations and at the end of each section a summary and various activities that are designed to help understanding of the main sociological issues of the given chapter.

Sociology: Themes and Perspectives

Of all the general sociology text books I have found this one the most useful (doesn't mean you will but!) and the most comprehensive in terms of content and detail. The book has become known to students as the "Blue Bible" . The book covers the major issues within sociology with chapters on various subjects. I myself used the book for my A-Levels and Degree course and found it provided a great background reader to complement further study.  There are plenty of copies about (earlier editions) so maybe a 2nd hand book is the best option? You may find one for sale on ebay or in a local 2nd hand book shop.

Collins Dictionary of Sociology

If you are going to buy just one book for your sociology course then this book must come top of the list. There are entries and definitions for sociological terms and concepts as well as providing background information on some of the great thinkers of sociology. My copy of the book is literally falling to pieces with the amount of usage. Need I say more?
